Oxidised bitumen

This is a complex mixture of high molecular weight organic compounds made from special crude oils. Oxidised bitumen is sold in bulk in tankers or in slabs (bags); the slabs are wrapped in polyethylene film and weigh approx. 24 kg each, packed on pallets.

The production of oxidised bitumen takes place through the use of air. This is an unusual bitumen manufacturing process that requires specific technical skills and that is why SIBA is one of only two companies in Italy capable of performing this process.

The manufacturing process consists of oxidising the residue by means of blowing with air, while maintaining a certain control of the temperature; this leads to the modification of certain properties, such as lower penetration and higher viscosity.

Oxidised bitumen products have reduced thermal susceptibility and this makes them suitable for use in sectors other than roads, for example in electrical and hydraulic works. Moreover, oxidised bitumens are the basis for the production of bituminous paints.

Oxidised bitumen is suitable for:

  • BUILDING: insulation panel fixing, insulation system production, paint, adhesive and sealant production.
    INDUSTRY: protective coatings for metal and/or cement pipes, production of waterproof insulation panels, sound absorbing panels, special sound insulators, waterproof flooring, rubber plasticizers, protective coatings for tanks and containers.
  • ROADS: implementation of waterproofing asphalt coatings, coloured asphalt surfacing, plastic mixtures for special paving and adhesive sealants.
